Movement Research Performance Journal Issue 62 was produced in tandem with We Exist in the Ambivalence of Those Motherfuckers, a residency program at Performance Space New York bringing four artists from Vietnam to develop new performances. Guest edited by maura nguyễn-donohue, Lumi Tan, and Anh Vo, the issue gathers twenty-one Vietnamese artists, curators, and organizers working in experimental performance to reflect on their practices, histories, and present conditions — including an environment of intensified surveillance and withdrawn international funding that has pushed experimental work into decentralized underground networks. Rather than offering a comprehensive survey, the issue operates in the realms of memory and embodiment, structured by a loose sense of temporality and shaped by the Vietnamese concept of duyên — fated affinity — as a methodology for building relationships across decades and diasporas.
